Diploma in Breathing Behavior Analysis
Applied psychophysiology, behavior therapy, and applications

The Professional School of Behavioral Health Sciences offers a professional diploma program in breathing behavior analysis. The program is restricted to colleagues who have completed the CapnoLearning Certification program, who are experienced CapnoLearning practitioners, and who are credentialed and experienced professional providers within their fields of expertise.  

The Professional Diploma program provides in-depth breathing behavior analysis training that reaches beyond CapnoLearning for optimizing respiration. It provides training in behavioral counseling, behavior modification, and cognitive behavior modification along with autonomic (e.g., HRV) and somatic (e.g., EMG) psychophysiology relevant to breathing habits and their effects on health and performance. It includes applications, practical and conceptual, as they apply to emotion, cognition, stress, sleep, physical performance, attention, pain management, and mental competence.

Coursework

A total of 12 units, beyond certification in CapnoLearning, is required for earning the diploma in breathing behavior analysis The courses, all of which are live webinars, include:

Trimester One
  • 304 Behavioral Counseling (1 unit)
  • 305 Autonomic Psychophysiology (1 unit)
  • 409 Breathing and Emotion (1 unit)
  • 611 Case Analysis, Review, and Practicum (1 unit)
Trimester 2
  • 307 Behavior Modification (1 unit)
  • 104 Somatic Psychophysiology (1 unit)
  • 406 Breathing and Pain (1 unit)
  • 612 Case Analysis, Review, and Practicum (1 unit)
Trimester 3
  • 308 Cognitive Behavior Modification (1 unit)
  • 411 Breathing and Cognition (1 unit)
  • 412 Breathing and performance
  • 613 Case Analysis, Review, and Practicum (1 unit)

Practicum

Candidates are required to buy, own, or rent a CapnoTrainer to complete certification requirements with their own volunteer subjects. Candidates are assigned practicum work for each course offering. Physiology data, session notes, snapshots, audio notes, report notes and data analysis reports and forms are uploaded to the Professional School CapnoLearning database for evaluation by faculty. Candidates also live-present two cases during each of the three case-review proseminars.

Scheduling

The program is offered once per year, usually at the start of the winter trimester. It must be completed in three trimesters (one year), four academic units per trimester.

Specific training: CapnoLearning Certification

Formal education
â–¸ Academic education: BS or BA degree in a relevant field, e.g., nursing
â–¸ Professional education: license and/or certification in a relevant profession, e.g., physiotherapy

Professional experience (during past five years):
â–¸ Two years of full-time experience in a relevant profession

300 Professional CE hours
